Maia Talks Marquardt, Marquardt Talks Maia

By Jake Rossen (jrossen@sherdog.com)
Thursday, August 27 11:00 am PT: In a sport full of highly overconfident, occasionally arrogant individuals, Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt come off like transcendental meditationists. Talking up their bout slated for UFC 102 on Saturday -- one that could determine a contender for Anderson Silva’s middleweight belt, providing he doesn’t eat his way up to super-heavyweight first -- Maia clarified his career perspective, claiming that his jiu-jitsu pedigree was a mode of transport into what he really wanted to do.

“It’s like Bruce Lee said: you have a boat to cross the river,” Maia said. “Then, when you go to the other side, you leave the boat. I love jiu-jitsu, but the competitions in jiu-jitsu were just the boat. The main goal was to fight in MMA.”

Marquardt, meanwhile, is no less polite but a bit more direct.

“I love kicks, punches, knees, takedowns,” he said, avoiding a lapse into …and spinning kicks, and the ring girls, and bleeding, and Burt Watson, and…. “My goal is to be the best in every area.”

And that’s pretty much the story of the fight: Marquardt does a lot of things pretty well, while Maia does one thing and does it better than just about anyone. If Marquardt plays bear trap, he loses. Style vs. style is very much a breathing concept, even in 2009.
